The new local broadcaster in Hilversum, which will replace the current Omroep Hilversum later this year, can count on substantial financial support from the town council. The council's media advisor has recommended increasing the annual subsidy for the local broadcaster from the current €158,000 to €250,000. No decision has yet been reached, but the council has agreed to a request from the new broadcaster to advance €35,000 for necessary preparatory work before it goes on the air.
The current broadcaster, Omroep Hilversum, ran into severe financial difficulties last year, and was forced to close its radio station, and reduce its TV output to a few hours at weekends. During the week, the channel airs a limited text service with local news, weather and other information plus a few adverts.
