Indian regulator seeking comment on permitting broadcasting by various bodies

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released a consultation paper on the issue of opening up of broadcasting services for various bodies.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released a consultation paper on the issue of opening up of broadcasting services for various bodies. According to the paper, it has suggested permitting state governments, urban and local bodies, three-tier Panchayati Raj bodies, public-funded bodies, political parties and religious institutions to enter into broadcasting activities which may include the starting of channels and entering into distribution platforms like cable services.

TRAI has sought comments of the stakeholders on the issue. Minister for Information and Broadcasting P R Dasmunsi informed Rajya Sabha in a written reply today that the government has sought the recommendation of TRAI on the issue, and its reply is awaited.
